May 16, 2007: The Darkest, Blackest Music of Taiwan

Taiwan doesn't exactly have a lively metal scene, but they do have a couple pretty impressive and well-established bands.

Seraphim (六翼天使) is an symphonic/opera metal band that is often compared to Nightwish. I first heard about them when I read a rave review of them on a prestigious metal review site while I was in Taiwan. I immediately went out to a local Tower Records and bought the Chinese language version of their album The Equal Spirit (平等精靈). Imagine European-style heavy metal sung in Chinese! Visit Seraphim's MySpace page for sound samples.

I recently read about a Taiwanese black metal band called Chthonic (閃靈樂團). They're an older band than Seraphim, and their music is much blacker (and harder for non-black metal fans to stomach). I haven't heard much of their stuff, but from the sound samples at their MySpace page, it sounds just like any other European black metal band you might hear. The cool thing about them is that they use some traditional Chinese instruments like the Er-hu (二胡).

Tanakh Ardent Fevers 3/10 (2006-10-04)
Notes: They have a very calm and unremarkable sound. The guitar solos have a lot of dissonance and feedback, and at times the two harmonizing guitars sound off. I hope they did it on purpose, but I don't like it whether it was meant to be that way or not. The singing is very well performed, but again, unremarkable. My favorite songs on the album are Drink to Sher, Grey Breathes, and Winter Song.
