Annual Gettysburg Civil War Battle Reenactment

Every year around July 4th, over 10,000 civil war reenactors and tens of thousands of spectators congregate on an open field just outside of Gettysburg to reenact one of the biggest turning points in American history.

Tips:

  • If you purchase the tickets online in advance, they'll be cheaper.
  • Bring cash, because the only thing you can purchase with credit here is the $30 entrance ticket, and the line for that can get pretty long.
  • Bring sunscreen because you'll be out in the sun a lot
  • Remember where you parked. This can be extremely tough in a huge sprawling grassy field with very few landmarks whatsoever
  • Purchase grandstand (I think $15 each) or bleacher tickets ($10 each), or at least bring lawn chairs, unless you don't mind standing five rows deep for two hours.
  • Keep in mind that this is one of those events where when the event is almost over, tens of thousands of people will be rushing to their cars to "beat the traffic". Yeah right. Prepare to sit in traffic for up to an hour when you leave the reenactment. Gettysburg's tiny one-lane farm roads aren't made to take any kind of traffic.

Dobbin House

Established in 1776, Dobbin House is the oldest standing structure in Gettysburg. During its long history, it has served as a family home, an Underground Railroad safe house, a field hospital, a tourist center, and currently, a restaurant. The upper floors of the house present a historic fine dining experience for the dinner hours, while the cellar now houses the Springhouse Tavern for casual lunch and dinner.

The food is above-average American fare. The staff is dressed in period costume. The most distinct feature of this restaurant is its extremely dim lighting consisting of a few standard light bulbs, some fake candle chandeliers, and candles. At some tables, you might have trouble reading the menu.

The Outlet Shoppes at Gettysburg

Those who like shopping can check out the Outlet Shoppes at Gettysburg. It's a nice looking collection of stores featuring a hotel, movie theatre, and over 70 stores. The food court here has The Dog House hot dog restaurant that seems to be a favorite among visitors.

Unfortunately, the outlet was closed by the time I got there
