May 21, 2007: Deep Web Exploration

There are several popular social bookmarking sites on the Web now. These sites are good for learning about the latest trends and finding the newest coolest sites. A few good ones that I regularly check are del.icio.us, Digg, Alexa, and Slashdot.

del.icio.us is a social bookmarking site that lets you maintain your web bookmarks online and also see what other people are bookmarking. Check out my del.icio.us links.

I tried out two major online calendar systems: Yahoo! Calendar and Google Calendar. It ended in a draw. You can make an argument to choose either one of them over the other, but it all comes down to which one you will see more often. A calendar is no use if you never see it. My personal choice is Google Calendar because I use a personalized Google homepage displaying the calendar as my browser home page. If you use My Yahoo! as your browser home page, I would go with the Yahoo! Calendar.

With the online calendar you can set up recurring events, reminders, and search events. I did find a few major differences between the Google and Yahoo! calendars though:

Use Yahoo! Calendar or Google Calendar to remind you of things to do and important events. I would recommmend Yahoo! Calendar if you prefer to be e-mailed about events, and Google Calendar if you use Google as your homepage because then you can show your calendar on your home page (Yahoo!'s personalized portal is still a bit quirky).

Backpackit is a good site for organizing todo lists. Its free features include creating your own pages with to-do lists, notes, e-mail reminders, and wiki-style pages.
