Scopolamine has been called “the world’s scariest drug.” Tasteless and odorless, it is often used by criminals to put people into a zombie-like state where they no longer have memory or free will. Scopolamine is just one of various “truth serums” that remove inhibitions or alter higher cognitive functions to make someone more easily controlled. The fact is, many substances change your mental state and may make you more susceptible to mind control and persuasion tactics.

In 2006, the Queensland University of Technology published research findings concluding that caffeine increases your chances of being persuaded by an argument. Although not nearly as scary as the world’s most terrifying drug, drinking coffee also makes you more easily controlled. It adds another tool to the arsenal of subtle suggestion techniques used by magicians, marketers, and scammers to control your mind.
So next time you need to persuade someone, head out to your local coffee shop and do it over a cup of Joe.
